Unboxing and Overview Video: GOOVIS Pro 2021 (P2)

Design & Physical Overview of the GOOVIS Pro 2021 (P2)

Goovis Pro Design

The GOOVIS Pro is not your typical personal mobile head-mounted display. Right from the design and the materials used, the head-mounted display feels premium. It has a bold, striking, two-tone design and there is a glass visor running across the head-mounted display with the company branding which makes it look and feel premium. Although the material used includes a combination of glass and plastic predominantly, the quality is good.

Coming to the physical overview, the front of the head-mounted display has Head Support, Headband Interface where you can connect your side strap and top strap. To the left, you will find an earphone jack and to the right of the head-mounted display, you will find the HDMI cable. On the bottom of the head-mounted display, there are two Diopter Adjusters, Interpupillary Distance sliders, Brightness Adjustment buttons, Display Mode switch button, and 3D/2D switch button.

Moving on, the cushion on the Head Support and on the Face is user replaceable, and they offer excellent comfort. Overall, the build and materials used on this head-mounted display are very good and if I had to nitpick, it would be the nosepiece which can get slightly uncomfortable.

Display and Features of the GOOVIS Pro 2021 (P2)

When this head-mounted display is connected to a phone/tablet/desktop/PC/console/monitor, it offers a wide 800 inches virtual screen experience when viewed from 66’ away, thanks to the dual FULL HD AM-OLED displays with 42 Pixels Per Degree.

It supports up to 4K videos and even has support for 3D that includes side-by-side 3D, Frame packing 3D and Top Bottom view. Further, the displays are designed in such a way that it supports nearsighted between 0 ~ -8.00D and farsighted between 0~ +3.00D, and also separates the glare caused by the ambient light reflected from the display and reduce eye strain.

The company says that this head-mounted display gives you an experience like sitting in an IMAX theater and that quite makes sense as the quality of the display is very good. Thanks to the adjusters, you get a clear and sharp image quality irrespective of the device connected. I was able to stream 4K videos from multiple sources and did not notice any lag whatsoever with the playback.

Moving on, I also tried connecting the head-mounted display with my smartphone and the connection can be established with a USB Type-C to HDMI adapter in case of Android phones and a Lightning adapter in case of iPhones.

The responsiveness, and quality, did not take a hit which is a good thing. Apart from this, there are plenty of use cases with this head-mounted display like watching movies in split screen view, connecting it to a console and playing graphic intensive games, connecting it to a Nintendo, and more. As it is a plug-and play device, it opens up the ability to connect to different types of devices. Good stuff, GOOVIS!

GOOVIS Pro 2 + D3 Portable Media Player

Goovis D3 Blu Ray Player

If you don’t want to connect your smartphone or any other device to the Pro 2, the immersive experience of the head-mounted display can be easily experienced with the help of the D3 portable media player. The D3 player is a portable android tv box that is exclusively designed for GOOVIS head-mounted displays.

Under the hood, it has a Smart Color 3.0 Display Processing Engine and runs on a dated Android 7.0 operating system with 4GB internal storage along with support for microSD / USB drive. Further, it packs a mammoth 8000mAh battery that offers up to 10 hours of playback time, and thanks to its support for 5GHz WiFi, 4K videos can be streamed in real-time without any buffering if you have a good internet connection. Talking about the physical overview, it looks like a large size TV remote albeit this is on the bulkier side due to the mammoth 8000mAh battery.

As for the buttons, there is a power on/off button, a circular wheel for navigating top, down, left, and right, a back button, a home button, a menu button, and lastly volume control buttons. Further, there is a USB Type-A port, HDMI port, audio jack, and USB Type-C port for connectivity alongside wireless connectivity options.

Moving on to the performance and software of this device, I wish the Android version could have been newer and the UI could see some refinements. That said, the performance and UI animations were just fine and although it is not the fastest and smoothest Android TV UI I’ve seen, it gets the job done.

Please be noted that the D3 player doesn’t come along with the Pro 2 HMD and has to be purchased separately.

Conclusion

The GOOVIS Pro 2021 retails for USD $799 (INR 66,130) and is available for purchase on the company’s official website. It ticks most of the boxes for a portable head-mounted display – excellent picture quality, comfortable to wear for longer periods of time, and easy connectivity. It offers an immersive theater-like experience in the comfort of your home. It can seem pricey for many, but the experience you get is amazing. Hopefully, future models will be priced competitively.
